"Jesus was an alien!" - How many times have you heard it said? Well, this time, at least, the story seems to have had an element of truth in it for once.
Border guards at the US immigration and entry point were involved in a cat-and-mouse chase that lasted twelve hours, when they sought out and captured Mexican illegal immigrant, Jesus Martinez.
Senor Martinez had illegally crossed over the border with six other Mexicans west of the town of Tijuana last Thursday, and headed straight for Imperial Beach, where they hoped to catch a fishing boat to San Diego.
Sadly, as the group skirted the San Diego Freeway, they were spotted by US Border officials who gave chase and cornered their quarry in Tocayo Avenue.
Martinez, who was armed, fired shots at officers, who returned fire, hitting him in the leg. His friends escaped over a garden fence, and, rather than be captured and sent back to Mexico, Jesus, the illegal alien, ended his life with a single gunshot to the head.
Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean were the first guards on the scene. Ramos said:
"It's tragic. I hope he forgives us, for we knew not what we were doing."
