Elon Musk has announced his plan to acquire Stormfront, the infamous white supremacist forum website, to increase Twitter’s user base. After failing to keep up daily users and with advertisers fleeing due to increased rhetoric of right-wing extremist content on Twitter since he bought the app, Musk has doubled down with this acquisition to make Twitter/X a haven for increasing hate speech content.
Stormfront, a self-proclaimed “most visited” neo-Nazi Internet forum known for propagating white nationalism and antisemitism, once acquired, will allow seamless integration for forum users to access Twitter with the same login. Reports show many users previously banned, have already had their Twitter accounts reinstated since Musk’s purchase in early 2022.
Andrew Anglin, one of America’s most notorious neo-Nazis, had his account reinstated few months ago along with white supremacist livestreamer Nick Fuentes, who tweeted in support of Musk’s move. Musk has claimed that he values free speech more than the consequences of hate speech and making extremism the new norm. His vision for Twitter is now being tested by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and now the Israel-Hamas war as he turns the app into a misinformation playground.
