Berkeley County, West Virginia - Following in the footsteps of Kim Davis, Berkeley County clerk, Jean Birman is refusing to issue birth certificates to children of unwed parents citing her ultra conservative religion.
Her religion strongly condemns intimate relations and having children before marriage.
Like Davis, Birman has agreed to allow her deputies to issue the certificates in order to avoid going to jail, however, she insists her name be removed from the certificates and instead state that said certificates are being issued under court order.
As a result, Birman argues that the certificates, and therefore, the births of these children are invalid.
"Like Kim Davis, I feel like I'm being forced to disobey God and His authority. These children should never have been conceived in the first place," Birman said.
