San Jose, CA – “Listen, I respect soccer. Sometimes I even wear socks when I gotta wear dress shoes like to somebody’s funeral. I’m just saying. There’s only one major sport in this city. Hockey. And we all know the Sharks blow this season. But that doesn’t mean I’m gonna start supporting my local Earthquakes. They’re not that good anyway.” This is a quote from a hometown Sharks fan and it generally expresses the sentiments of many area residents.
Let’s quickly take a deep dive into Sharks hockey, shall we…? It’s hockey y’all. They skate. They fight. They score goals, usually many less than their opponents, but goals are still possible – although in these guys cases very very very occasionally possible… However, in the case of professional sports in general, no matter the number of points scored upon, the bad play, the poor trades and draft picks, the disappointments, the losses, even in the very vacuum of logical consciousness, there will always be fans. And the Sharks are no exception. Maybe some people just like to suffer.
That same hometown fan continued by saying, “I don’t know. Maybe if the Earthquakes bring home the Cup or something then I’ll go buy a t-shirt…”
Bring home the Cup Earthquakes and that guy may buy himself a t-shirt. Go Quakes!
