Residents sat up and took notice, whilst others peered from behind their twitching curtains yesterday afternoon, when an ice cream van started playing the theme tune from Match Of The Day over its loudspeaker.
The unlikely incident took place on the Orchard Park Estate in Hull, as temperatures soared, raising the possibility amongst ice cream vendors that children might want to buy their wares.
More used to the gentle, jovial and melodic strains of 'Greensleeves' rather than the rousing fanfare of the theme to the Premier League review programme to signal the arrival of the ice cream van, the locals tentatively crept out of their homes to see what all the fuss was about. One said:
"I could hear the 'Match of the Day' music, so I came out for a lolly."
Another said:
"It made me want to put me football boots on, and have a kick-around with me mates, whilst consuming a 99 with a flake!"
And have sales improved as a result of having the 'Match Of The Day' theme blaring out?
"I should say so!", said new ice cream man, Harry Maguire.
