The shabby way in which the US Senate dealt with the Brett Kavanaugh inquiry indicates that America is fucked, according to one man speaking from the safety of his bedroom, a long way from the US, this morning.
The enquiry - not a criminal one - 'ruled' that Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh had no case to answer, enabling the Senate members to vote him in, by the slenderest margin possible.
Moys Kenwood, 55, said:
"Mr Kavanaugh consistently and vehemently protested his innocence. This being a serious matter, in that, the US was seeking to elect the 'right man for an extremely important job', they might, at least, have asked the FBI to take its time, and to undertake an exhaustive, and thorough inquiry, rather than to shovel more muck over an already-dirty situation."
Kavanaugh's accusers, said Kenwood, were treated in a shoddy manner, particularly by the one man who should not have done so, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump.
His mocking of Christine Blasey Ford defies belief. "Even if you are of the opinion that Ms. Ford was lying through her teeth, the president's comments, and the manner in which he delivered them, were a throwback to darker times gone by," said Kenwood.
"The complete disregard the whole organization showed for propriety here, is of worrying portent for the future. It seems that politics, is in control of the Law, and that the Law is just a toy in the hands of those in control."
Indeed, maybe it's time the oaths sworn in US courts were changed to reflect the current state of how the Law is perceived in the country. How about this?:
"I, (your name here), do solemnly swear, that the evidence I shall give, shall be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, unless it is in my interests, or the interests of my paymasters, to lie, so help me God."
Other oaths could be creatively adapted to take into account present-day disrespect for fairness, equality and 'justice'.
Or, it could be that, the current oaths are retained, but those repeating them cross all of their fingers to avoid being labeled liars when the truth, as it invariably does, becomes known.
Whatever the case, it seems that the whole basis for Law in the US has crumbled, the reason for Law in the US has been manipulated, and the future of the Law in the US - like that of America, itself - is fucked.
