Colombian pop singer Shakira has been charged with tax evasion of nearly $15 million by the Spanish government, after testimony from Shakira’s Hips, the star witness.
The ‘She Wolf’ singer maintained her innocence through the trial, but Shakira’s Hips provided authorities with sufficient evidence to confirm her tax evasion and residential status for the years 2016, 2018, and 2020. Shakira’s Hips, who apparently, don’t lie, worked for her since 2001, have travelled with her on tours as well as to her multiple residences in Spain, Colombia, and the Bahamas.
Shakira joins a string of celebrities convicted of tax evasion including Martha Stewart, Willie Nelson, Lauryn Hill, and Jennifer Lopez’s former husband, Marc Anthony.
Shakira continues to maintain her innocence and does not plan to cooperate with Spanish authorities over the unpaid taxes. She said, “I did not spend enough time in Spain to be considered a resident. Of all the things I deserve, for being such a good girl – this is not one of them. The Spanish Feds can come at me if they want. Luckily, I have strong legs like my mother, so I can run for cover when I need.”
Shakira will be on a US tour in fall of 2022. Shakira’s Hips and all associated songs will be dropped from the line-up.
