Ivana Poker, famous Southern poet from Macon, Georgia was found hanged in her apartment this morning -- an apparent suicide.
Friends and relatives have stated that Ms. Poker, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature, had been depressed and disconsolate the past few months after the sudden and unexpected death of her husband of 76 years, Hiram. He died at Macon General Hospital after being admitted for an elective hemorrhoidectomy.
At Ms. Poker's apartment, the police discovered a suicide note, which, true to form, was in the nature of one last poetic gesture.
