Jenny Hampton of New York City, a self-described "people-pleaser" who goes to enormous lengths to win people's approval, to her own detriment, says that she wants to tell her arrogant, condescending therapist to fuck off, but is concerned as to what his reaction will be.
"It's really hard to find someone experienced who''s accepting new clients," said Hampton, noting that, if her counselor, Dr. Doug Harper, were to fire her as a patient, it could be months before she manages to find someone else willing to accept her $160 an hour.
Hampton explained that what made her want to tell off Dr. Harper was the therapist's comment that, given Hampton's track record of hysteria, her verbally abusive father had some basis for calling her an over-emotional cunt.
"I found that very offensive," said Hampton.
In her codependent past, said Hampton, she might have let the demeaning remark slide. Thanks to Dr. Harper's help, however, she has been learning to be more assertive and to stand up for herself, even if she ends up ruffling some feathers in the process. For that reason, despite her reservations, Hampton is seriously contemplating telling Dr. Harper to fuck off during one of their upcoming sessions.
"I'm going to feel him out, kind of play it by ear," said Hampton. "I'll bring it up when the time seems right for both of us. No need to burn any bridges."
