If you hear some coolnotes coming at you in the vicinity of the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution Phoenix, it's probably the supercool and sexy, funky jazz sound of the Jailbird Jazz Sextet, the brainchild of jailed former comedian, Bill Cosby.
Cosby, 81, and legally blind, had the idea of getting a band together as he wiled away the tedious hours of what existence he has left, tapping away on his mattress with two drumsticks he'd had sent into the prison.
Knowing there were plenty of old 'jazzfreaks' around, it was a small step to rounding them up, and getting the warden's permission to jam. Practice has been going well, and the sextet (there are 6 of them!) hope to be able to put on a concert to facilitate a jail riot in the near future.
The sextet plays selections from renowned musicians such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and the Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band.
