The mayor of Bridgeport, Conn. and his family have received several threats since appearing with the Rev. Al Sharpton on TV this week. Mayor Bill Finch was on Sharpton's MSNBC show Monday evening to discuss weather conditions in his city during the blizzard that struck the Northeast.
At the end of the interview, Finch thanked Sharpton for "fighting the good fight on climate change." People who made the threats are a combination of science deniers and racists from across the country.
One of the e-mails has been traced to Billy Bob Blankenshit of Cracker Hill, South Carolina. I contacted Blanenshit at his home and he said, "Hold on while I remove my hood so I can hear you." After a pause, I asked him why he made the threat.
"I like and respect Charles Krauthammer, although he looks like he's been hit in the face with a bag of hot nickels. He's on Fox and says that Climate change is just a fantasy like Islamic religious myths. So I figure that the Yankee mayor is on the side of ISIS. He should be hanged as a traitor," he exclaimed.
Maude Pritchett of Lexington Kentucky also made threats to the mayor. From her new jail cell, she reportedly said, "I like Ron Paul when he says that he doesn't think, that the federal government has the power to force businesses to racially integrate. This gives him credibility with me. So, when he denies climate change and says the earth might be flat we should pay attention to him."
Of course it should be noted that not all climate change deniers are racist threat makers. Just last week the GOP controlled U.S. Senate rejected a bill stating that human activity contributes to climate change.
