British Prime Minister Liz Truss was seen returning to Marks & Spencer yesterday to return a pair of open-toed sandals she had purchased a couple of days earlier.
When asked by the cashier what her reason for returning the items was, she claimed that they had shrunk since the day she had tried them on in the shop, denied that it had been a rushed purchase which she had not thought about beforehand and told her mum, who had selected the colour, to go and wait in the car.
The footwear, a bright yellow pair of flip-flops, had lost its colour and had turned blue by the time she returned it. She was unable to provide an explanation for this. She was also unable to explain why she had posted a photo of herself wearing the sandals in her Facebook page soon after purchase, with the caption “These fit my feet well and provide ample room for growth, growth, growth.”.
She added that she was “absolutely clear” that she still intended to wear flip-flops but that she might postpone the purchase until next year.
The manager of the shop later visited Liz’s house to get some more details and to double-check Liz’s reasons for the return, but the door was opened by her mum who said that Liz was doing something really important and couldn’t speak to him, but that she “absolutely isn’t hiding under the table”.
