Former Scottish Labour Party leader and current MSP for Paisley North, Wendy Alexander has announced that she will not seek reelection in the MAY 2011 Election.
She has expressed a desire to spend more time with her children and as a result could not commit the time necessary to serve for another term.
While this type of decision is not unheard of in modern day politics,female senators in the U.S are very much reversing the trend when it comes to balancing a career and family life.
Tamara de Campo, a junior republican senator for New Hampshire, is one of an increasing number of female U.S politicians who are doing the exact opposite from the likes of Wendy Alexander.
De Campo and co are proud to subscribe to the principle of Stay Away From Home Motherhood where career women leave the domestic duties to others and concentrate totally on their career in the corridors of Washington DC.
"People like myself and Congresswoman Lilian Ataka decided that we would be more fulfilled as women if we followed our destinies and dedicated ourselves to serving others for as long as we could.
"Although neither of us currently have partners so we have had to make alternative arrangements for child care. We're both fortunate enough to be able to afford nannies. My little devils are looked after by a Puerto Rican au pair. They are very efficient and always have the kids tucked up in bed when I come home at 2.a.m.
"Even when I have to stay over in the event of an early vote , I'll spend at least 5 minutes a night talking to the kids via Skype.
"Although the children are staring to talk with a South American twang, I don't see that as a problem at all. Its healthy to expose youngsters to different cultures. Mind you, I wish they'd eat something other than achiote peppers and guanabanas. The diapers don't half leave a whiff in the garbage.
"Anyways, the arrangement works very well and I'm even thinking of employing a second nanny to cover the nightshift as I'm going to be spending even more time away from home over the next couple of years.
"But I'm sure Rodolfo and Pedro (Rudolph and Peter answer better to these names) will take to the new girl like ducks to water.
"Its a win win situation for us all".
