Playboy Magazine has started a new religious controversy right before Christmas by putting a semi-naked Virgin Mary on the cover of their Spanish language edition. The edition, which has already sold out, is drawing criticism from the Catholic Church and other church groups in Central and South America and around the world.
The woman on the cover has been identified as Maria De La Luz Guadalupe De Los Angeles Torres de Jesus Gonzalez Hinajosa. She appears on the cover naked, but with a shawl drapped over her head and covering her breasts. A stained glass window is seen in the background.
When asked about the controversy and why he would put this symbol on his magazine, Hugh Hefner said that "I don't understand the problem. Everyone knows that there has never been a virgin in any issue of our magazine. If they want to equate this slutty Mexican woman with bit titties with the Virgin Mary, that's them drawing the conclusion."
The pictures inside the covers, however, tell a different story.
On page 73, a young and bathing Maria is seen naked in a lake or river with the caption "Before the Angel Gabriel came, Mary still had her cherry."
On page 76, Maria is seen naked atop a donkey with the caption "Please ride my ass to Bethlehem."
On page 77, Maria is pictured outside of a motel with the caption "I'll show you where there's room to put it inn."
On page 79-80 (the centerfold), she's pictured naked in the hay.
On pages 81 to 83, she is seen in multiple scenes of sex with various shepherds, wise men, and barn animals (the picture comparing her two humps to those of a camel, however, is original).
Father Francis Faith of the San Antionio Diocese was incensed by the pictures. "The naked angelic choir boys left me speechless. I have purchased as many copies of this issue as I can to keep it out of our follower's homes."
