In a further attempt to impose a bit of Americana into the lives of third world countries, The U.S. based Christian Coalition funded a "Thanksgiving Relief Effort" designed to bring the American November feast to three countries in Central Africa. The delivery methods of the desperately needed food items however, proved to be responsible for more than 600 injuries across the countries of Ethiopia, Sudan and Chad.

Reports from villagers in the region were horrifying as their experiences were told to CNN reporters. "We saw strange things falling from the sky", one villager said. "As they came closer we could see the white ball-like objects waving what looked like tiny arms, then two of them crashed through my roof and destroyed my hut."

"We had no idea that the birds couldn't fly", said Larry Labatome, chairman of Thanksgiving Relief Effort. "We knew we had to send the Bibles down by parachute, but we figured the turkeys would float down safely."

Further damage was reported after large crates of canned potatoes, yams and corn were dropped by parachute as well, but the weight of the containers caused more damage to dwellings and livestock. "Well, we should have dropped the heavy stuff on the outskirts of the village instead of on the village. Live and learn I guess", said Labatome. "Still, it feels good to be doing God's work".

Villagers in Ethiopia were the worst hit, and expected to be spending Thanksgiving week repairing damage to their homes and tending to injuries. There proved to be no practical use for the splattered turkey remains, but the canned food items held up well after the drop. Villagers were asking reporters if anyone had a can opener.
