Police in Istanbul have announced that a member of the public walked into a police station in the city yesterday, and handed in a nose which, it was claimed, looks like that of the murdered Saudi Arabian dissident journalist, Jamal Khashoggi.
The nose is currently undergoing forensic tests.
If the tests confirm that the nose did, indeed, belong to Mr Khashoggi, it will be the first piece in the jigsaw puzzle, with only the rest of his body to find, so that a complete picture of his final moments in the Saudi Arabian consulate can be put together.
The nose was found by a woman walking her dog. She said the dog was sniffing around in some bushes at something that looked like a dead body, but then ran up to her carrying the nose in its mouth.
Police forensic scientists say that the nose looks like Mr Khashoggi's, but that it is far too early at this stage to make any further comment.
* It should be noted that, for an investigative journalist like Mr Khashoggi, the most prized part of the human body is the nose, for, without it, a journalist would have no 'nose for a story'.
