A woman trading in Battambang market stank of fish, it has been reported.
The woman, aged around 60, was working in the 'indoor' part of the market which is covered by a corrugated metal roof which acts as insulation, and the temperature in that part of the market was close to 40°C.
She was selling fish.
The location of the fish stall is between a stall selling fish on one side, and a similar stall selling fish on the other, which may have had a bearing on things.
Englishman, Moys Kenwood, 54, in the market to browse, was overcome by the fumes. He told us:
"For fuck's sake! It's bad enough in Hull Fish Market, but this was new territory for me! I felt like I was being suffocated using a couple of lemon sole. It was dreadful."
Kenwood needed to sit down to catch his breath, and the woman from the middle fish stall rushed to help him. Kenwood again:
"She was humming. I mean, she must sleep with fish, bathe with fish, eat ONLY fish, and drink them as well. She was a genuine fishwife - probably even married to a fish. Putrid!"
Asked about the woman's assistance in his 'moment of need', however, Kenwood changed his tune:
"Ah, yes! She had a heart of a goldfish !"
Police are not investigating.
