The United States Navy rescued forty-seven illegal immigrants in the Gulf of Mexico, off the Mexican coast Friday. Upon interviewing the aliens, Navy officials learned that they had mistakenly set out into the Gulf, thinking it was the Rio Grande. "They just got mixed up on their directions", said one sailor.
The forty-seven, which consisted mostly of young men were apparently trying to cross the border into Texas in order to find work. They had no maps and no compasses.
Advocates of open borders cited this incident as an example of the desperation faced by people trying to flee the hopelessness of developing countries such as Mexico. One open borders advocate even argues for more naval and Coast Guard vessels to be placed along the coast of Mexico to rescue what he sees as no slowdown of disoriented illegal immigrants.
