Houses of Parliament, Westminister, London: According to what we have all been taught in textbooks at school and university, the British constitution worked along these lines. Britain was a representative democracy; the police were reasonably honest; and the country was governed under the rule of law. MPs were also honest and driven by a sense of duty and ministers were also public-spirited.
Government of the people by the people for the people does not exist in the UK. Today's Politicians are far more interested in obtaining cash for meaningless directorships whilst in power and highly paid but again meaningless jobs from their masters when they leave politics. There is an existing system of briefing, sleaze and backdoor payments to be maintained and this will will carry on regardless.
For many years our Politicians have been virtually controlled by the media and big business. We are effectively run by those who hold financial or media power. The media having taken over the function of Parliament, with information placed into the public domain privately and unaccountably, has meant that the traditional checks and balances that Parliament had in place, no longer operate.
Then politicians, deceitful gutless bunch of individuals that they are, wonder why the British public are all disgusted with them. But where is the Herculean figure who can cleanse modern Government and media corruption, so that Britain can return to a saner and cleaner path? Both Oliver Cromwell and Winston Churchill tried, but it didn't last long...
The debased and corrupt nexus of influence and power operating in Britain for decades, reminds us all of the old saying, that the fish rots from the head down!!
