image for Gordon Brown to Tony Blair 2002 memo leaked, details confirm rift between the two

Downing Street officials are in damage control mode today as a 2002 memo from current PM Gordon Brown, then Chancellor, to the PM at the time Tony Blair was leaked to a British Newspaper today.

The memo clearly demonstrates the level of resentment which Brown held towards Blair at the time, even though an appearance of teamwork was being presented at the time.

In the document, Brown implies that it was he who made Blair such a successful politician and seems to be suggesting that should Blair not back down and agree a succession timeline, Brown would take further action.

However throughout the memo, it seems Brown is also craving recognition from Blair, having believed to have been excluded by this time from Blair's inner circle and was not even getting chances to see the PM at times.

The opening part of the memo reads;

"Tony,

You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
When I met you
I picked you out, I shook you up, and turned you around
Turned you into someone new
Now five years later on youve got the world at your feet
Success has been so easy for you
But dont forget its me who put you where you are now
And I can put you back down too.

Dont, dont you want me?
You know I cant believe it when I hear that you wont see me
Dont, dont you want me?
You know I dont believe you when you say that you dont need me
Its much too late to find
You think youve changed your mind
Youd better change it back or we will both be sorry".

A further leaked memo from Blair to Brown seems to represent the response from the PM at the time;

"I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
That much is true
But even then I knew Id find a much better place
Either with or without you
The five years we have had have been such good times
I still love you
But now I think its time I lived my life on my own
I guess its just what I must do"

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
