It will come as something of a shock to us all that remember some innocent times on Children's television in the 1970s and 1980s, that Boris Johnson played the part of Basil Brush for years.

Natty and dapper of waistcoat, toothy, and with the popular catchphrase "Boom, Boom, Mr Derek, Basil Brush brightened up the three-day week, miners' strikes and Thatcherism, as well as school days where being able to solve a Rubik's cube quickly was seen as something to aim for.

Johnson said: 'Gosh, crikey, phwoar, I have and continue to do some embarrasing and regrettable things, but playing Basil Brush was a low point for me. Those lines I had to say, and the costume was very small. I will only say this once, but it was the only time that I have regretted not being John Bercow.

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
