AFC Wimbledon, which won promotion to the Football League yesterday after beating Luton 4-3 on penalties in the Conference play odd, has been shocked by the news that most of their supporters have left to form another club.
AFC was only formed in 2002 by Wimbledon FC fans as a protest at the original club relocating to Milton Keynes. Since then, AFC Wimbledon have been promoted from the lower leagues 4 times until the glory day at Eastlands on Saturday.
Fans spokesman John Pardew explained the surprise move :
"We formed AFC as a direct result of our club prostituting itself in the name of the fast buck. Relocating to another town was the ultimate betrayal and we could not condone the money grabbing move.
"We wanted to start up club that would remain true to the old Corinthian principles of playing for the love of the game, not just to win.
"Gaining promotion to the Football League is another betrayal.
"Success is not why we follow football".
Its understood that Pardew and co plan to form a new club AFC Wimbledon Light that will apply for membership to the Premier Division of the Combined Counties league, where AFC Wimbledon started.
