From west coast to east, from border to border, celebrations lasted well into the night as America celebrated the New York Yankees, who clinched a berth in the 2010 American League Divisional Series with a 6-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Incredibly, it is their first post season appearance since last season, and only their fifteenth out of the last 16 seasons.
"It's great for the country," said third-baseman Alex Rodriguez. "This reaffirms the notion that in America you can still go out and buy whatever you want, be it a car, a house, or a pennant."
A tearful Joe Girardi echoed that sentiment. "You can say what you want about the Steinbrenners, but I can tell you that nobody can write a check like that family," he said.
Girardi added that, "I've had a lot of resources that helped me get the team to this point, and Hal Steinbrenner has been a major tool."
