Sports reporting can be difficult. Today Japan played Paraguay in the round of 16, and following a mind-numbingly dull encounter, Paraguay progressed into the last 8 following the first penalty shoot-out of the tournament.
In a match utterly devoid of any noteworthy incident, with the possible exception of the odd late tackle and a couple of accurate throw-ins, it came as a relief to see the Japanese fans - many in fancy dress - in colourful and exuberant mood.
Although why, remains a mystery.
Throughout the game, the Japanese coach stood on the touchline with a face like a bulldog chewing a wasp, and his counterpart, the Paraguayan came over all emotional as his team won the penalty shoot-out.
But the man of the match was undoubtedly the referee. His whistle-blowing technique was flawless and inspirational. His arm gestures were theatrical and expressive without being over the top. He kept up with the play and allowed the game to flow.
England's remaining World Cup representative, referee Howard Webb, told us:
"The chap today raised the bar on refereeing, but I think I can safely say that I'll give him a run for his money."
COME ON HOWARD! THE WHOLE COUNTRY IS WITH YOU!
More as we get it.
