In a surprise news announcement, Elton John has stepped up to speak on behalf of his troubled friend, George Michael, in an effort to drum up some support for the imprisoned singer/songwriter.

Elton has said that he "empathises a great deal with George in his time of trouble" as he has been through tough times himself on the rocky road that is celebrity.

The 'Candle in the wind' singer is well known for his high profile campaigns and being a celeb' shoulder with kind words to offer other troubled stars.

As well as already having re-written Candle in the wind for the late Princess Diana, he has now re-written the same song to perform at a benefit concert he is organising to welcome George Michael, when he finishes his custodial sentence.

"I would like to encourage everyone to look within and at our own lives" said the passionate pop pianist. "none of us are perfect, we all have our ups and downs and with that in mind, I want to send a message out to George, to let him know that we are all here for him"

The big hearted performer has also given the fans a sneak preview of the new lyrics, written especially with George Michael in mind. As he hasn't recorded it yet, you will have to sing along with the lyrics below to the original version of the song off Youtube. Enjoy!

My friend George might be seen
as a man who just crashes into walls
but we all have to ask ourselves
are any of us any different at all?
as you crawled out of the car
and they made you test your breath
I wondered how did that feel
when they made you state your name

but it seems to be that you risk your life
like a man does on a whim
always knowing that the next thrill
could be what does you in
and we have tried to warn you
but it does no good
your a man who's losing so much more
than you thought you ever would

The justice might feel rough
But The roughest part of all
is what the papers say
its good for sales to humiliate a pop star
and fame is a price you paid
even now your inside
your pain still makes the news
and the papers have their say
but your talent
I hope it sees you through

Cos it seems to me
You choose your path
like a man who has nothing
but there are people who have far less
that get everything
and I have tried to warn you
cos I've been there too
but the scandal burns out long before
your talent ever could

My friend George it seems
Is stuck between four walls
But it's a place he built himself
Long before the prison called
I hope that George can see
The young man he was before fame became a factory
Who dreamed of being more than a sideshow
More than a media fiasco

But it seems to me
that he could be
Like he once was, again
Through his writing and his singing
He could be the same
And I would like to help him
Like he did for me
But the man will be out long before
He lets himself go free
