A fan of TV cop drama, 'Hawaii-Five-O' travelled to Honolulu on a 7-day vacation, hoping that he might run into the stars of the show during filming, but returned home a disappointed man, when everyone he met was a stranger.
Tom and Betty Barnwell, from Los Angeles, took a flight to the Pacific destination with the express intention of meeting their heroes, but nothing of the kind happened.
The couple had imagined that Honolulu being a relatively small and tight-knit community, they stood a fair chance of running into Jack Lord who played Detective Steve McGarrett, James McArthur (Detective Sergeant Danny Williams), Kam Fong (Detective Chin Ho Kelly) or former Waikiki Beach beach bum, Zulu, who played Kono Kalakaua. They asked around, but nobody had heard of these people.
The Barnwells visited all the locations they had seen from their TV, even going to the suite of offices at the Iolani Palace that the Five-O team worked out of, but nothing. They were even told that the cops hadn't really used the Iolani Palace, but that it was just images of the front of the hotel that had been used.
"We're very disappointed. We would have been content if we could have seen Steve McGarrett, and had him say "Book 'em, Danno!", but it wasn't to be."
Jack Lord died in 1998.
