LOS ANGELES- Hip Hop record producers and songwriters are feverishly searching for English words that rhyme with "orange", "purple", and "silver", fearing the end of the genre if no perfect rhymes are found soon. "When you can't even find a word to rhyme basic colors," said one unnamed producer, "you know you're in trouble."
For years Hip-Hop and Rap artists have found rhymes for a long list of English words, having no problem writing lyrics that rhyme with words like "witch", "bigger"," pass", and "truck". But lately the lack of the use of "orange", "silver", and "purple" in their songs has put the industry in the cross-hairs.
"It's ludicrous!" exclaimed one rapper, who asked not to be identified as Ludicrous."I've tried to bend words like sponge, or flange to make em sound like orange...but it aint happn', P. You can see right through that."
One industry insider said that Hip-Hop labels are going into the 'hoods offering big dollars for the establishment of any new slang words that rhyme with "orange", "purple", or "silver", just so artists can then work the words into their songs. So these attempts have fallen short of catching on: "milver"- a bootylicious MILF with grey hair, "curple"-hitting a brother in the throat, and "lorange"-the last sip of the bottle.
If no legitimate rhymes for these words are found soon, many feel it's only a matter of time before Hip-Hop fades into obscurity. "The clock is ticking, that's for sure," said Flava-Flav. But, he may have just been referring to his huge timepiece necklace.
"It's not over yet," added one young rapper, who asked not to be identified due to pending legal issues, Four years ago, nobody knew what twerking was...so we could still have a "zorange", or a "pliver", or even a "sturple" come down the pipeline...who knows."
