There is no 'shortage' of qualified teachers in Ontario. Quite the opposite in fact. There are so many new teachers looking for their first teaching contract that hundreds (if not thousands) are willing to do 'anything' in order to 'get' that first contract.
The Catholic School boards do NOT discriminate against non-Catholics. Oh no! It's just that teachers applying for jobs with the Catholic school board need to include a letter of recommendation from their 'Priest' along with their application and resume.
Newly qualified teachers are so desperate that many non-Catholics are 'becoming Catholics' in order to get that necessary letter of recommendation from their 'Priest'.
How low can people stoop? We must ask ourselves, 'who is worse....the lying, teachers who are willing to leave their personal faiths to become 'lip-service' Catholics just to get a teaching job - or the Catholic church for 'taking them in' to UP their numbers?
This makes one think! Do you want YOUR children, if you are Catholic, being taught by liars and faithless teachers, or would you rather them be taught by, perhaps, honest Atheists?
Food for thought!
