The World Swimming Championships which are being held in Rome are today overshadowed by a major row over a controversial new swimming suit that can improve performance. The governing body have approved the suits even although many swimmers claim it gives swimmers wearing it an unfair advantage.
Former swimming champion Mark Foster tried an experiment firstly swimming with his normal swimming trunks then with the new swimming suit. He was able to swim 1 second faster over 100 metres and 1 second is a lot in swimming with some medals being decided in hundredths of a second.
Professor John Davidson claims "Soon we will be able to make a swimsuit that arrives at the finish 1 second ahead of the swimmer."
That could prove interesting.
