In a surprising twist of events, Silvio Berlusconi has announced that the real reason that he is divorcing his wife, is that he intends to marry German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
It appears that Mr Berlusconi intends to create a Pan-European state, uniting the Italian and German nations through the marriage.
Beyond that it appears that he intends to adopt Nicolas Sarkozy, forming a 3 way euro-nation family. Although the logic of forming one nation out of the three most annoying European nations is somewhat questionable.
"At that point, we will be unstoppable" Berlusconi described during an interview with an Italian newspaper.
From what has been reported in the German press, it appears that the plan has come as a complete surprise to Merkel, who is happily married.
