Animals hand-raised by German zookeepers display disturbing tendency toward cruelty, goose-stepping, and following orders.
Germany's celebrity polar bear Karl Dönitz has triggered controversy by fishing out 10 live carp from his moat and then killing them in front of visitors.
Critics say Berlin's Reichstag Zoo should not have put live fish inside Karl's enclosure. But captive German media report that the carp were put there to eat up algae that would otherwise suck the life-force from neighboring fish and animals.
"The algae present a danger to the Reichstag Zoo way of life," said a spokesman.
There is speculation that hand-reared Karl killed the carp just for fun.
The Frankfurter nBunne news website reports that Karl "senselessly murdered the carp", fishing them out, playing with them and then leaving the remains for Allied journalists.
Germans are now looking forward to the public appearance of a new polar bear cub - Wilhelm Frick - in the dock at Nuremberg Zoo.
Frick will take his first public steps on Tuesday in front of the television cameras and photographers.
He has also been hand-reared by Germans.
