When travelling US citizens have been trying to pass as Canadians because of Donald Trump

Fueling a spike in sales of all things Canadian, Americans going overseas are depleting store stocks, especially of sports gear, in the US and abroad.

While visiting France, Brendy Wells and her boyfriend Scott Winter were soon tired of explaining what is happening with Donald Trump wherever they went. "We're not even supporters, Scott really hates him," Brendy told a The Spoof reporter after they were back home in Greeley Colorado. "Scott let his beard grow out and we were able to find some jackets with Canadian team logos at Decathlon when we were in Paris. He got a Ottowa Senators jacket and mine is a Toronto Maple Leafs. Well, that really cut down the number of times people would stop us and ask us about Donald Trump."

While avoiding conversations and possible confrontation with other foreigners about Donald Trump, Americans like Brendy and Scott have faced the ire of Canadian citizens. Brendy told us, "I think most Canadians we met really understood what we were going through. But one lady got really mad at us. She said because people always think Canadians are Americans, and now with Americans pretending to be Canadian, it would just be worse."

We talked to one store owner who's sales benefited from word getting out to travelers before they even leave the US. Mike Patho, owner of Mike's NFL shop in Tempe Arizona, has sold out of all his Canadian sports paraphernalia with most sold to Americans going overseas. "All we have left are some Canadian Hockey League patches, it's the new logo, it's pretty cool," Mike says. "We had one customer buy some sports gear and then went next door for a maple leaf tattoo."

When we went next door, we found the tattoo shop had been doing a brisk business in maple leaf tattoos all day. Sheila Star, a tattoo artist at Bionica said, "Most of my customers getting maple leaf themed art are actually thinking of moving to Canada soon because of the election."

Whether they are traveling abroad or preparing to move to Canada, Canadian slang and phrasebooks have become popular too. Americans are now heard saying things like, "chesterfield," "tuque," and "poutine."

The funny story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
