Bill Clinton has come out to lead the honors being bestowed on the eminent chemist Carl Djerassi, the scientist who developed the first contraceptive pill.
Bill Clinton commented: "No one has done more for horny men worldwide than Carl Djerassi! If I had a dollar for every time I heard "No, No Bill - I might get pregnant and my husband would kill me!", I would be a rich man today."
Djerassi came to America from Austria as a Jewish refugee while World War II was engulfing Europe. A scholarship awarded to him from first lady Eleanor Roosevelt put him on the road to his fantastic discovery.
63 years ago, Djerassi's research led him to synthesize a hormone which suppresses the normal female cycle and inhibits female fertility changing the lives of billions of women (and men, let's face it!) all over the world.
In his eulogy, former president Clinton said: "Every man who's every had to stay on third base and hold back from making a home-run owes this great scientist a great debt. Oh, and every woman who had to stay home alone and feed the bearded clam, and I include my wife here, also owes Carl Djerassi a huge debt."
RIP Carl Djerassi.
