Well-wishers wished Pope Benedict well after he broke his ankle while attempting to address lots of people in a big pizza in Venice.
Remnants of the hot food dish had left the stage a bit slippery, and his right foot slithered away in an emotional send-off.
As the Pope raised his arms and moaned with pain, shouting "Jesus Christ!!" loudly, thousands of onlookers yelled out his name and thanked him for his blessing.
A rescue helicopter was flown into the Vatican, and the Pope looked very sad as he was taken away.
"He will be sorely missed and bitterly disappointed at having to miss Saturday's match," said Cardinal Clive Sullivan, one of Pope Benedict's team-mates in Vatican Vulcans RFC, who play rugby in St Peter's Square every Saturday morning.
Pope Benedict is a brilliant scrum-half, renowned for his superb off-loads and mesmerizing side-steps. He has also made thousands of conversions, many from great distances.
