Progressive congressional Democrats expressed great displeasure at the number of times House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rose to applaud statements by President Donald Trump during his State of the Union address, Tuesday.
Not all television cameras were focused on Vice President Mike Pence and Pelosi, seated behind the president, but those that were revealed Pelosi standing and clapping at least ten times, far more than any other Democratic legislator in attendance. That prompted the socialist left among the Democrats in the House to speak openly of removing Pelosi as Speaker.
"How could she stand and cheer on Trump when he made that idiotic call for compromise and cooperation?" asked a newly elected, self-styled female socialist from New York. "Do you think Trump plans to 'compromise' on abortion? And what is the 'socialism' that he fears in America? Regulations that protect us from faulty products? Medicare? Social Security? Clean air and clean water?"
When asked why she clapped and stood up so often, Pelosi explained that the white suffragette outfit she wore was light weight and the House chamber was too cold. "Rising and applauding warmed me up. I apologize if my action was misunderstood."
