BERWICK UPON TWEED - It was discovered today that the town of Berwick upon Tweed is technically still at war with Russia. In 1853 Queen Victoria declared war on Russia and signed the document Victoria Queen of Great Britain, Ireland and Berwick upon Tweed. This resulted in the Crimean War.
When peace was signed in 1856 Queen Victoria signed the treaty but left off Berwick upon Tweed resulting in the Scottish town technically once again at war with Rusia.
This situation continued til 1966 when a soviet official came to Berwick to meet the then Mayor Robert Knox and sign a peace treaty. It has now transpired that the treaty was signed in red ink instead of the regular black, which means that yet again the Scottish borough is at war with the Russians. The leader of Berwick Council said I bet the Russians are soiling their pants at the thought of taking on Berwick.
