Gordon Brown has written personal letters to David Cameron, George Osborne and the other targets of a smear campaign devised by one his aides.
The prime minister stopped short of a full apology, instead referring to the allegations, which were put together by special adviser Damian McBride, as a 'matter of great regret.'
We can now reveal the content of the letter to George Osbourne.
Dear Georgey,
it's been almost 3 days since we last spoke and the pain I feel when you ignore my emails, calls etc is just too much for me to bare at the moment.
Damian was a damb sod to send those cruel emails and were he ever to know the truth I feel things could have been much worse for both of us
I miss the way we used to audit public spend together or the times we used to escape to a publicly funded 2nd home in Chelsea to watch the BBC Parlament channel and work on submitting our expenses.
Those days have gone obviously.
Georgey… see the man not the party.
I mean it's only politics isn't it.
Yours,
Brown Bear
