It was looking good for Liverpool in the closing stages of the match with Arsenal, a goal up despite being down to ten men following Joe Cole's debut dismissal for a reckless tackle.
Liverpool continued to hang on, despite at one point being reduced to nine men, as defender Daniel Agger had to be treated for concussion.
Then disaster struck.
A late cross from the left was parried onto the post, and Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina promptly lobbed the rebound into his own net, to the delight of the travelling Arsenal contingent.
And the consternation of the massed hordes on the Kop.
Reina later said that he was blinded by sunshine and couldn't see what he was doing. Desperately unlucky as sunshine is usually in short measure on Merseyside.
When asked to comment on the game, a beaming Arsene Wenger remarked on the goal:
"I didn't see it. Neither apparently did Reina."
He then walked away laughing like someone demented.
Joe Cole, commenting on his red card, said:
"I wuz gutted, sick as a parrot. Know what I mean, John?"
Which was unusual in itself as our reporter isn't called John.
More as we get it.
