Dirk "Bare-Handed" Mancini, an all-star shortstop with The Key West Keymakers was asked about the amazing fact that he has never used a baseball glove.
Mancini just smiled and said that when he was a kid his family was very poor and they could not afford to buy him a glove. He said that when he was playing little league ball at the age of 12, Sports Illustrated did a story on him and the fact that he did not use a baseball glove.
Mancini said that by the time he got to high school his coach insisted that he use a glove like all of the other players. Mancini refused. He transferred to another school where he was voted the Best Defensive Fielder in the District.
Dirk is in his second season with the Keymakers and he hopes to one day play in the Big Leagues where he says he will still not use a glove.
He said that he has long ago gotten used to playing 'bare-handed,' and if he were to start using a glove at this stage, he might end up making one or two errors a season.
