Flush Meadows, Ny - It was an historic first day at Flushing Meadows where on one of the side courts the world's first Siamese twins to play professional tennis made it through to the second round.
The girls actually received a bye as Maria Sharapova refused to play them, citing phobia about Siamese twins. "She breaks into a terrible rash", said her father, "She wishes them luck, but she can't risk letting the condition get out of hand."
The girls are now set to play Elena Dementieva. Ira and Meena are from Georgia, Russia's estranged neighbor, they speak no english and they have two forehands, no backhand stroke.
"We like to hit the ball hard," said Meena, smiling through an interpretor, "We Rock", said Ira in English.
Several players have complained about the twins and their unconventional game. One sister tosses the ball for the other to serve and vice versa.
"They seem pretty good," said Rafael Nadal, "I hope they don't have brothers."
