Forget cabbage patch dolls, Barbie, hoverboards and Gameboys. The hottest gift for 2017 is Bitcoin. Whether you buy an entire Bitcoin (USD $10,000 at press time) or the smallest of increments, every kid (and adult) wants this exciting stocking stuffer.
Bitcoins are purchased on Coinbase, an exchange for cryptocurrency. You can download Coinbase easily on your iPhone, transfer cash by credit card or by direct debit from your bank account, and purchase the coin for a small fee. You may want to pick up some Ethereum (USD $460 at press time) or Litecoin (USD $90 at press time) while you are at it.
What kid doesn't want in on the action? You can buy Bitcoin at the smallest of fractions, to the 100 millionth unit, so anyone can get in for as little as $10, $50 or $100. By design, the maximum number of Bitcoins that can be issued is 21 million.
As more retailers accept Bitcoin in lieu of cash and then hold onto it, they have a common interest to keep the value of Bitcoin forever rising.
"I see it two ways," says one local dad. "My son can own a fraction of a Bitcoin and lose it all. Just like every other toy that sits in our closet or the basement. If that happens he has learned a valuable lesson about speculative investments. Or, we have just figured out how to pay for college. Now that's what I call Christmas!"
