At the height of a political corruption trial, the prosecuting attorney attacked a witness. "Isn't it true," he bellowed, "that you accepted five thousand pounds to compromise this case?"
The witness stared out the window, as though he hadn't heard the question, casually flicking his £2000 rolled-gold pen, and glancing occasionally at his Rolex watch, and humming to himself.
"Isn't it true that you accepted five thousand pounds to compromise this case?" the lawyer repeated loudly.
Gordon Brown chewed on his tongue a bit, but still did not respond.
Finally, the judge leaned over and said, "Mr Brown, please will you answer the question."
"Oh," the startled Brown said, "I thought he was talking to you."
