Popular podcaster and all around dude-bro Joe Rogan issued an Instagram apology last weekend after a compilation circulated widely on social media showing Rogan using the N-word seventy times. The clips were compiled from twelve years worth of Rogan podcasts. Now that Rogan's casual racism has been widely exposed, he says it's the "most regretful and shameful thing" he has ever had to address publicly.
Here is an excerpt from his apology:
I'd just like to say that I'm really not a racist, even though those clips sure as hell made me look like one. Even I was horrified and ashamed when I saw that video compilation. As soon as I saw it, I thought, "Oh shit, time to hurry up and issue a public apology before it kills my career." So here I am.
There’s been a lot of shit from the old episodes of the podcast that I wish I hadn’t said, or had said differently. I thought as long as it was in context, people would understand what I was doing. I used that word in a comedy context, which is another way of saying this isn't really an apology.
I feel horrible about using that word now, but I'd like to explain that I was on DMT at the time. Have you ever tried DMT? It's fucking amazing. You will fly through outer space and strange globular aliens will talk to you and they will make you do things. Like say things you will later regret. So if I said anything wrong it's all the fault of those little aliens. Like, drugs are fucking amazing, especially DMT. But also LSD, STP, PSD. Anything that has letters is cool.
I would also like to apologize for another clip for in which he comparing an area with a large population of Black people to the film Planet of the Apes. I knew immediately afterward that it was a racist thing to say. Of course, that doesn't explain why it took me twenty years to delete it.
