London Fashion Week has had its socks blown off by socks.
"They're the must have accessory this winter," said fashionista, Gok Wan. "It's what all the fashionably warm people will be wearing."
After last winter's fashion of flip flops saw two dozen extremely fashion conscious women succumb to hypothermia and five times that number get frostbitten toes in the deep snow, Gok Wan is sure that the socks will go down a storm with women this winter.
"The great thing about socks," said fashion design and lager drinker Stella McCartney, who is not trading on her ex-husband's name, "is how versatile they are."
McCartney's winter sock collection was shown off by an array of stunning models and Kate Moss. Some of the socks had been made very long and were worn like a scarf, but in general, the socks were worn on the feet.
"Stella's done marvellous things with socks," said the not wan, Gok Wan. "Some come up to the thighs, some only as far as the ankle. She's even managed to merge stilletoes and socks, which is a fashion first and something I for one am looking forward to."
The thigh high socks from the McCartney collection are available in gold leaf and striped wire. It is expected that the high street stores will be producing their own versions in more conventional materials such as silk and wool.
One shopper out doing a spot of early Christmas shopping was stopped in Dorking high street to find her opinion of the latest fashion.
"Finally," said random shopper, June Whitfield, showing off a pair of knee high striped woollen socks, "I'm fashionable again."
