William Hague - My Fake Diary
Thursday, 3 May 2012
Argentina's new ambassador to London, Alicia Castro, tried to put me in an awkward situation over the Malvinas Islands after asking me at a public meeting whether I was ready to "give peace a chance" by opening talks on the islands' future.
I was a bit flustered, sensing that Castro was about to make a long statement, I cut her short with: "Thank you. That's enough. Stop - Britain will agree to talks only if the 3,000 islanders want them - something they show no sign of doing!"
I have to thank my personal assistant Lucien for that answer he whispered to me as he was toying with my portfolio!
