Daley Thompson had a go at trying to be a professional footballer rather than a double Olympic gold medallist and world champion.

He had an unsuccessful go at it with Mansfield Town and Stevenage Borough, as well as being a fitness coach for Wimbledon and Luton Town.

As declared in the Express: "Mr Thompson, MBE, OBE, CBE, would like Rooney, Giggs and co to take a long, hard look at what evolves over the next three weeks, when someone will emerge - just like he did - as an unsung and unpaid hero who did it all for the love of his or her sport, not the money!"
