Syria has never been the best place to be a lesbian (Lesbos is, obviously) - it has widespread homophobia, religious extremism, and half the women wear burkas. But with the recent news that not one but TWO Syrian lesbian bloggers have turned out to be straight American men in disguise, the whole carpet is being pulled from under the Syrian lesbian scene, and given a good licking.
"Sally" is a lesbian living in Syria, who had a road-to-Damascus realisation of her sexuality at the age of 17, quite literally on a road just outside Damascus. She has attempted to meet many fellow Sapphic playmates in her native land, but is continually disappointed.
She says, "Every time I arrange to meet them, they stand me up. Then when I ask them they tell me they're actually a trucker from North Dakota or somewhere."
Last week she attempted to host a lesbian orgy, featuring scissoring, pillow fights, flower pressing and many of the other things that real lesbians do. However, when nobody showed up, she resigned herself to the fact.
"I can sort of understand it," she explained. "After all, I myself am a truck driver from Arkansas."
