City police were on hand when a flight arriving from Delaware, landed in Los Angeles Calif. They were alerted to an incident of a couple who tried to avoid the "high cost of flying" by putting their three children into a dog crate covered with a blanket.
The children were taken away and immediately sent to the local hospital for examination of possible injuries.
Police are also considering arresting the baggage handlers and ticket agent who did not check out the crate before loading it into the plane.
The parents Lloyd and Linda Ausman are in police custody and are awaiting extradition to Delaware for charges to be filed against them.
The children are said to be "no worse for wear" said a hospital spokesperson. Arrangements will be made for the children to be brought back there for further investigation into other possible charges against the parents.
Parents are strongly urged not to put children in dog crates to avoid air fares, but simply leave the kids home alone.
