A large number of goats in Taiwan may have died because of a local wind farm, it was suggested today. A farmer on an outlying island told the BBC he had lost more than 400 animals after eight giant wind turbines were installed adjacent to his grazing land.
The Ministry of Agriculture says it suspects that there may be a link between the wind farm and the goats' demise. They said the cause of the goats' deaths still needed to be investigated. They said they doubted the goats died from exhaustion after being kept awake by the noise of the turbines.
The bodies of the dead goats were found all over the island shortly after the wind farm became operational.
A spokesman for the power company said that in future, all wind turbines would be built with a taller main tower so the sails would be above goat level.
