Vincent Van Gogh, the famous painter, has also been well known for allegedly having cut off his own ear in a fit of depression.
However a team of historians revealed today the true story behind his lost lobe and how it came to happen.
In fact it was not Van Gogh who cut his ear off but his friend at the time, fellow painter Gauguin.
It appears that both Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, and his brother Theo Van Gogh were well known for a series of self-harming and wildly dangerous stunts and were in effect the first "Jackass" team.
Some of the pranks that they came up with included locking a naked Gauguin in a cage with a wild monkey, whilst the others looked on laughing hysterically, and once tying Theo behind a horse which then ran through the streets of Paris dragging him along.
Of course the trio's japes ended in tragedy when Vincent went too far and shot himself in the chest.
